At the end of last week the former president, Donald J Trump, on his imitation Twitter network “Truth Social”, which is neither, predicted that he would be arrested three days ago. He admonished his sycophants to protest “or they wouldn’t have a country anymore,” echoing his speech on January 6, 2021. He wasn’t arrested. He did manage to raise a lot of money, though. He excels at that. The arrest, anticipated throughout the country, was put on hold. Not this week and maybe not next week.
As far as Trump goes, as a lady-in-waiting, he was impatient. He posted this:
“What kind of person can charge another person, in this case a former President of the United States, who got more votes than any sitting President in history, and leading candidate (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination, with a Crime, when it is known by all that NO Crime has been committed, & also known that potential death & destruction in such a false charge could be catastrophic for our Country? Why & who would do such a thing? Only a degenerate psychopath that truely (sic) hates the USA!”
To answer that. First, the “kind of person” is a prosecutor. That’s his job. Trump proudly boasts his past voter support, conveniently ignoring that Biden got eight million more than he did. He suggested that “NO crime”, is “known by all”, but his list of crimes is known by all, though not all have acknowledged them, many fearing repercussions from fellow spineless sycophants, and worst of all, from Donny his little self.
Most disturbing is his phrase “potential death & destruction in such a false charge.” Echoes of January 6th. He’s suggesting that guns are not only needed but need to be loaded. Now.
The question remains. If Bragg has the goods on Trump, why hasn’t he been arrested yet? I’m not alone when I suggest that there remain at least three other more significant criminal charges that are in the chute, and that it might be more sensible to let at least one of them go first, although the Bragg charge is more serious than just paying a porn actress to keep silent, especially if the money came from campaign funds. However, the following carry greater penalties.
Speaking of ladies-in waiting, here they are:
Georgia election law allegations. Trump’s efforts to influence the outcome of the 2020 election, to “find” extra votes, is a biggie.
The January 6th insurrection. The January 6th committee recommended four criminal referrals to the DOJ regarding Trump. What Jack Smith, the prosecutor, does with them is unknown.
The classified documents. After claiming that he had returned all classified documents to the DOJ the FBI discovered more than a hundred more at Mar-A-Lago. What happens next is unknown.
The totality of these charges is ominous for both Trump and the country. Can Smith, Bragg, Willis, and the DOJ know what will happen when indictments take place? Should they care? Is justice isolated from the context of potential death and destruction that it can operate without consideration of these potential catastrophes? Is equal justice just theoretical? Is no one truly above the law?
As David Graham writes in the Atlantic after reading Trump’s post mentioned above, ““Why & who would do such a thing? Only a degenerate psychopath that truely hates the USA!”
Good answer.
As Donnie once said, “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
